Airdrie Mounties are warning residents of a fraud discovered through a social media marketplace platform.

"Airdrie RCMP is urging the public to use extreme caution when buying online, and that products that appear legitimate can be fake," police warned.

Police are currently investigating the fraud. In this case, a “seller” listed an iPhone for sale that appeared legitimate to the consumer.

"The phone was sealed in an iPhone box and had all the correct labelling. The security numbers associated with the label were related to iPhone products and were further used to deceive the consumer."

However, when the consumer brought the phone home and attempted to log into Apple features, it did not work.

"The consumer brought the phone to the Apple store, where it was confirmed to be a well-done fake phone, not an iPhone."

The investigation continues.
