Today was a special day as Walmart officially opened the doors of its brand new 430,000 square foot Fulfillment Centre. Walmart has 57 stores, four Distribution Centres and now one Fulfilment Centre in Alberta which is located in Rocky View County (RVC).

This $100 million project uses logistic technology to help improve productivity. Even though the building is using lots of robots, the project has created hundreds of jobs throughout the construction and ongoing operation of the centre.

"It's a testament to the commitment that we have, not only with the province but also with the country and how much we want to continue to grow and make a difference for Canadian customers and communities," explained Walmart Canada President and CEO, Gonzalo Gebara.

Currently, there are more than 16,000 associates working for Walmart across Alberta. Gebara mentioned Walmart has been operating in Canada for almost 30 years, but they are just getting started.

"Alberta is known for its vast natural resources and resilient workforce and has always been at the forefront of economic development. The opening of this Fulfillment Centre is a testament to our commitments as Albertans in harnessing our potential and diversifying our economy," stated Airdrie East MLA Angela Pitt.

At the grand opening, Walmart donated a total of $20,000; $10,000 to the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, and another $10,000 to the Dashmesh Culture Centre supporting their No Hungry Tummy Program.

RVC Reeve Crystal Kissel expressed gratitude and appreciation, extending a heartfelt thank you to Walmart for continuing to invest in RVC and the region.

"The decision by the representatives of Walmart to lay down its roots in Rocky View County and to continue to expand here speaks volumes about the potential and continued growth within this community."

This Fulfillment Centre is capable of shipping 20 million items annually.
