With warm weather on the way, the question has arisen about when Airdrie's Spray Park will open.

Usually, the splash park opens up before the first week of June depending on weather or mechanical issues, and as of right now, it is still on schedule.

Cory Anderson, who works with the City of Airdrie Parks Department explained where the city is at when it comes to starting it up.

"Pending AHS (Alberta Health Services) inspection, we just have to pass a water quality test, and then it will be opening up after that."

The test was sent this week so now the city is just sitting and playing the waiting game. They hope to get the results back sooner rather than later. When asked if at any point this summer the splash park would have to be shut down due to drought conditions and the need to save water, Anderson stated the city does not expect any interruptions.

"The water is recirculated, the water that we use goes through a filtration system and is used over and over again."

Here are the features of the park according to the City of Airdrie website:

  • Two twist n' spill water toys
  • A splash blaster spiral
  • Ground sprays
  • Interactive tappin' tunes piano that plays music and sprays water
  • Discovery stream
  • Toddler water table
  • Four slides
  • Public washrooms and change rooms
  • 12 picnic tables and shade
  • All of this in a fenced-off area

This year the park will have two new features, one for toddlers and one for kids aged 6-12 to play with. One is like a wheel that spins and sprays water which the kids can control. The other new toy for young toddlers is like a fountain that they can run through and enjoy.

Anderson finished off by saying he expects this year to be very successful if we do get the high temperatures as last year saw lots of Airdronians enjoy the parks.
