In June, Daria Skibington-Roffel will become the new board chair of Volunteer Airdrie.

She's taking over the spot currently held by Dave Maffitt.

Skibington-Roffel has worked with Volunteer Airdrie before. When it first started back in 2009, but is making her official comeback 14 years later.

"I helped get them incorporated and get the charitable status back in 2010."

According to Skibington-Roffel, she has been volunteering since 1988 when she was in middle school living in Calgary.

"Back in 1988 when Calgary was hosting the Olympic games, there was a school torch relay and nobody wanted to volunteer, so I did."

Skibington-Roffel went on to talk about why she decided to volunteer for the torch run after her teacher gave a two-hour lecture about why it's important to volunteer.

"That speech inspired me so much I went up to the teacher at the end of it and said, where do I sign up?"

The first ever board she joined was at 16 for the St. Francis Alumni Association. Ever since then, Skibington-Roffel has spent plenty of time volunteering, more recently for organizations like Airdrie and District Victims Assistance Society and the Airdrie Horticulture Society.

Maffitt will be taking a step back but does plan to continue working for Volunteer Airdrie just in different roles. He is excited to see what the future holds for the organization and Skibington-Roffel.

"I think she's just going to take Volunteer Airdrie to the next level. I'm excited to see how that all unfolds in the next few years."

As of right now, Skibington-Roffel will shadow Maffitt so she can meet everybody and learn how things are done within the not-for-profit.

"It's totally changed since I was last there.  I don't want to go in with a steamroller or anything and completely change everything. I don't think a whole lot needs to be changed."

Skibington-Roffel finished off by saying for her, volunteering is a path of service, as she feels you can only take so much from society but you also have the responsibility to give it back.
