It would appear that Heritage Junior Hockey League games that take extra time to decide don't suit the Airdrie Techmation Thunder's palates particularly well.

After losing in a shoot-out 7 - 6 to the Sylvan Lake Wranglers in their final pre-Christmas game, the Thunder dropped a 4 - 3 decision last night (December 30) in overtime against the Didsbury-based Mountainview Colts.

The game last night was divided into two, very distinct segments.  The first period belonged to the Colts with Jordan Saunders, Jay Heistad and Aidan Saunders notching goals to put Mountainview ahead 3 - 0 after 20 minutes.

After the teams played a scoreless second frame, it was Airdrie's turn to dominate a period with Jacob Cathcart scoring his 12th and 13th goals, with Tyler Broesky's second of the season sandwiched in between.  Cathcart's second of the night came with less than a minute to play and forced the extra session.  The Colts' Steven Bell scored his 17th of the year after nearly four minutes of the OT frame to give the Colts the 4 - 3 win.

Airdrie, and the rest of the HJHL, are off until next Friday when the Thunder once again host the Sylvan Lake Wranglers starting at 8:00 pm at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.  Heading into 2023 Airdrie is third in the North Division of the HJHL with a 15-10-2 record for 32 points.  Sylvan Lake and Mountainview are in a first-place tie, three points up on Airdrie.  The Wranglers have played one game less than the Colts.

In the South Division, the Okotoks Carstar Bisons have lost just twice all season.  They have a 24-2 record and 48 points, nine more than the second-place Cochrane Generals.
