Two Bert Church Chargers football players from the 2023 team's roster will be heading to the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL).

"The recent Chargers graduates to sign include Parker McKillop, linebacker, and Caleb Van Sluys, safety/defensive back."

McKillop will be joining the Kamloops Broncos of the BC Football Conference and Van Sluys will join the Calgary Colts of the Prairie Conference. McKillop took home team honours in fall 2023 for co-defensive Backfield Player of the Year, while Van Sluys earned the team's Heart Award.

"Caleb and Parker have been vital parts of our team the last few years," said Steve Larsen, Bert Church Chargers coach. "We are excited that they can continue their football careers in the CJFL and look forward to watching them play with and against other Chargers alumni."

The two athletes are joining the ranks of six other Chargers alumni set to play in the league this season:

  • Aedan Thompson, defensive end, Vancouver Island Raiders (Nanaimo, B.C.)
  • Ashton Jackson, offensive line,  Kamloops Broncos  (Kamloops, B.C.)
  • Ty Ochitwa, defensive end, Westshore Rebels (Victoria, B.C.)
  • Tristan Remus-Arevalo, wide receiver, Westshore Rebels (Victoria, B.C.)
  • Charlie Wiersma, kicker/punter/wide receiver, Westshore Rebels (Victoria, B.C.)
  • Colter Cannon, safety, Prince George Kodiaks (Prince George, B.C)

"Whether they are visiting on their bye weeks or their off-season, our alumni are continually coming back to our field to help the next generation of players," Larsen said. "They are forever a part of our Chargers family, and we are very proud of their accomplishments and commitment to our Charger spirit."

The CJFL consists of 19 teams across five Canadian provinces and is known as a training ground for both Canadian university football and the Canadian Football League (CFL). CJFL training camp begins in July.
