Yesterday, Airdronians came out to support a 'Charity Check Stop' for the Airdrie Food Bank.

The event was spearheaded by Airdrie RCMP, Municipal Enforcement and the Airdrie Fire Department.

In total, $443 was raised and 171 pounds of food was donated thanks to some giving Airdrie residents.

Tanner Smith, a Peace Officer with the City of Airdrie explained why they decided to put on the 'Charity Check Stop'.

"I had seen it in other communities so I figured that it'd be kind of good for us to do as well."

He also said they are always more than willing to get involved in the community and that the food bank was very happy to have them put this together.

For Smith, being able to do something like this at this time of the year to help out community members is really special.

"I just want to thank all the people that come out and donated for the families that need it and hopefully we can just make some people's Christmas better."

This won't be the last one as the event was great for the community and the food bank, especially at Christmas time.

"This is the first event of its kind that has ever been done for us. But I sure overheard them talking about making it bigger and better every year going forward," stated Lori McRitchie the Executive Director of the Airdrie Food Bank.

McRitchie is very thankful for everybody who has done a fundraiser for them this year, just yesterday they also received a $6500 donation from Airdrie Family Eye Doctors.

McRitchie stated that the funds and donations they received from the events will go to their year-round support, as demand has been growing consistently in our city.

"We've never seen need as high as this, it's been very very busy."
