On April 2, curling history was made and the team to make it into the history books was none other than Airdrie-based Team Plett. The team that represented Alberta in the 2023 New Holland Canadian U-21 Men’s And Women’s Curling Championships, was the first team to win both U-18 and U-21 curling championships.

When the team's skip, Myla Plett first heard of the news after winning the gold medal round in Aréna Jacques Laperrière, Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, she was surprised to say the last.

"When they told me that, it was right after the game, and I didn't know. The reporter came up to me and asked me. I was in shock," she said. "I was just super proud of the girls and the way our team played out there and their accomplishment[s] to make history."

The tournament which started on March 26, saw the team ten games, winning all of them. Their final game for the gold medal was against Team Mitchell from Newfoundland & Labrador. Team Alberta won that game with a decisive 10-4 final score.

Team coach Blair Lenton said that the achievement, while still sinking in, is a testament to the hard work of all the team members.

"It really paid off; and that they can actually keep going at this level all year and do everything that they did this year... It's just amazing."

Looking back on this year, both Plett and Lenton said the championships, both provincially and nationally have been emotional and very memorable.

"With that final win in the last game; we just started crying. It was a really emotional time knowing that we were the team to represent Canada at the U-21 juniors," Plett said. "It was unbelievable."

While the tournament in Quebec was the last one of the season for Team Plett, the girls, including Alyssa Nedohin (third), Chloe Fediuk (second), and Allie Iskiw (lead) are already looking towards December 2023, when they will travel to Finland to partake in The World Junior-B Curling Championships.

However, for now, the team is revelling in its historic season, with multiple provincial and national championships.

"I've never been to Finland and I am super excited. I've Googled pictures and it looks like an amazing place to go. So I am super pumped to go there and experience a new place," Plett concluded.
