A group in Airdrie is looking for 500 people who just want to dance.

The Creative Airdrie Society is putting together the dance team for Sharing Dance Canada 2017 to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary and Airdrie's place in it.

Sharing Dance Canada is one of 38 Canada 150 Signature Projects that are funded by the Government of Canada and was the brainchild of Canada's National Ballet School.

Deanna Hunter, the Chair of Creative Airdrie's Board of Directors, says the recruitment of would be dancers has nothing to do with ballet though.

"This isn't about ballet, it's about fitness and having fun.  The cool thing is, because of the National Ballet's credibility and status in Canada, they actually had a song written and some of the most important choreographers in Canada choreographed it to be accessible and approachable to anybody and all ages in Canada.  It's going to be pretty amazing!"

Creative Airdrie was approached by Janelle Watson, an Airdrie resident and alumnus of the National Ballet School. According to Hunter, "She was actually involved in Calgary's big event, but she lives in Airdrie and just thought why can't we have a Sharing Dance day slash flash mob in Airdrie?  So she approached us to help her get the word out."

The group is hoping for 500 Airdrie residents to take part in the group.  Participants will get fit and have fun learning the specially choreographed dance over a three month period.  No previous dance background is required.  Hunter says rehearsals will begin on March 9 and take place weekly until June.  Team Airdrie will then take part in Dance Day events in Airdrie and Calgary starting June 2.

Registration and participation is free.  Janelle Watson will lead rehearsals.  Hunter says anyone can register as an individual, a family, a group of friends or even a workplace and be part of the fun.
