UPDATE #3

RCMP have laid murder charges in relation to a shooting in the Canals neighbourhood on Saturday.

Michael Antony Roebuck, 59, of Airdrie, was arrested following the incident and charged with First Degree Murder. He has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Airdrie Provincial Court on September 19, 2019.

RCMP have released the victim's name. Daniel McDonald, 56, of Airdrie was killed in the event. RCMP advise the public to respect the victim's family's privacy.

UPDATE #2

Corporal Gina Slaney of the Airdrie RCMP detachment released further information about the event earlier today.

She said, as far as motives, they do not believe it was gang-related and that the two males involved were known to each other. As far as the motive goes, Slaney said the investigation is still ongoing.

"Our members are currently in the neighbourhood right now, speaking to neighbours and possible witnesses to the event. Hopefully, we'll be able to answer those questions soon."

Slaney said that, prior to the RCMP arriving, the victim was already receiving support.

"I do know that one neighbour for sure was tending to the male victim injuries upon police arrival," said Slaney. "Other than that, I'm not sure of anything else that was done at the scene."

She said that this incident is uncommon for the City of Airdrie and has definitely already affected the community.

"It's very startling for many people. It is our first homicide in a few years and it's not something that happens very often. So, people are afraid. Facebook has blown up (...) and people are concerned. But, I do want to stress, at no time do we believe anybody else was in jeopardy during this incident. The males were known to each other so this wasn't just a random event."

The public is assured that there is no further danger and that RCMP are doing everything in their power to handle the situation.

"Trust that there are many, many officers that are pulled in, in regard to this investigation, and they are doing everything that needs to be done to ensure that this is handled properly."
