A new piece of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation goes into effect tomorrow (June 1) to help protect convenience store workers and gas station attendants.

Under the new rules, all gas purchases must be prepaid prior to fuelling up.

Over the past four years, Alberta has seen five workers killed and three others seriously injured after gas and dash incidents.

Along with the new rules, convenience stores will have to create and implement a detailed violence prevention plan. These plans are meant to minimize the risk of theft and robberies by requiring employers to have time to lock safes that cannot be opened overnight, use video monitoring, limit the access to the premises as well as display signs to inform the public of time lock safes.

Retailers are not required to upgrade their pumps with pay at the pump technology.
