A quick-acting RCMP officer on patrol early Monday morning was able to alert residents of a Chestermere area home of a blaze that had broken out in their detached garage.

The officer spotted the large fire on a rural property at approximately 2 a.m. September 28 on Chestermere Boulevard west of Rainbow Road and quickly alerted fellow on-duty RCMP members as well as Chestermere Fire Services.

After arriving on scene of the fire, the Mountie found the detached garage to be fully engulfed in flames and woke the residents of the home so they and their pets could safely evacuate.

Fire crews managed to keep the blaze from spreading to the home.

"It is a relief nobody was injured and it is fortunate one of our members was in a position to spot this fire," said Chestermere RCMP Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz. "The quick response enabled an evacuation of the home and ability to alert Chestermere Fire Services to extinguish the fire before it could spread."

The cause of the fire is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Chestermere RCMP at 403-204-8777 or your local police. Anonymous tips can be provided via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com, or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
