It is that time of year when we can't help but notice the beauty of autumn as the trees slowly morph into their brilliant colours. The question arises, why do the trees change and why at different stages?

For those wondering why we are treated to this seasonal treat, Ray Pereversoff, owner of Water Valley Forest Nursery, says we need to revisit our high school science studies on photosynthesis. He says, "Photosynthesis, provides energy for the trees and as we get into fall we are losing a couple of the main components which are sunlight and heat that drive chlorophyll to do photosynthesis. So, the plant sees the leaves more as a liability as the days are getting shorter and cooler and those are the cues for fall colour."

The fact that we have had a warmer, longer fall means the trees are hanging onto their leaves in order to store as much energy as they can before winter comes. Pereversoff says think of the leaves as solar panels for the trees to garner as much energy as they can before falling to the ground or being blown away in the wind.

As to why the trees change at different times and in different hues Pereversoff explains, "Trees have evolved differently, so every species will have its own colour of course and it will have its own timing for when it thinks winter is coming. If they are under distress they will be a little bit sooner and they are in a frost pocket they may have got a few more cooler nights and got that cue."

An important reminder that due to the warmth and dryness of the fall, Pereversoff says we should be watering our trees and shrubs. He says, "Water this time of year is critical. We have had a fairly dry fall over the last month and trees are going to need moisture to help them get through the winter." Put a hose on the base of the tree with a light trickle to allow the moisture to soak down into the roots. Your tree will thank you for the leg up in helping it get through the winter.

Aside from all the scientific reasons for the lovely fall foliage, the main benefit to us is that we have been able to enjoy the pretty season a little longer this year due to a warmer, later fall. One positive point in what has been more than a challenging year. At least it can be said that 2020 had a nice, colourful, picturesque fall.
