The Airdrie Fire Department is strongly encouraging you to refrain from using the stove as a counter top after crews responded to a second kitchen fire in a week.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 23, when Airdrie Fire was dispatched to a house in the 100 block of Reunion Green.

Upon arrival, crews determined the fire had taken place on the stovetop after combustible materials were placed on top with the stove accidentally turned on.

"A mother and two children, home at the time of the incident, had escaped to the street. A quick thinking neighbor grabbed a fire extinguisher, went inside and extinguished the fire before it could take hold and escalate," said Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel.

Twelve firefighters attended the scene to ensure the fire didn't extend beyond the stovetop before allowing the residents back inside their home.

"That's why we need people to be very attentive and understand that, now that you know it can happen, work diligently to ensure it doesn't happen to you," said Rabel.

Rabel added that the quick thinking of the neighbour saved the house, although, he said when handling a similar situation, make sure you're safe and understand the situation you're getting yourself into.
