Airdrie RCMP were called out to some businesses in the city that received email bomb threats that demanded Bitcoin as payment earlier today (December 13).

According to the Alberta RCMP, businesses in communities throughout the province got the same demands.

Airdrie Corporal Gina Slaney confirmed that the Airdrie detachment received complaints from more than one business about the threats, although she wouldn't say exactly how many.  The General Investigative Section responded to the call says Slaney.

"I can tell you that the Airdrie RCMP were alerted to an email which reported a threat to more than one local business in town.  The investigation determined that the email was, in fact, a hoax and there is no threat to any public at this time."

Slaney says the Airdrie RCMP take all of these calls very seriously.  "We recommend that, if you do receive an email of this sort, with any type of threat that you let us know.  We do take these matters seriously and we will investigate.  Hopefully, it's a good outcome like we had today and there is no real threat."

Slaney says calls of this nature take up a lot of the RCMP's time and resources but they would prefer to err on the side of caution and look into every such complaint.

The Alberta RCMP continue to investigate the other threats made to businesses in the province.  They say if you receive one of the email threats to not respond to the Bitcoin demand.
