The helicopter that helped launch STARS finds a new home in Calgary
A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter has landed at its new home at The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, STARS said the Airbus BK117 aircraft entered service in 1985 and was part of the original fleet that helped launch the non-profit air ambulance. The helicopter supported missions across Western Canada before being retired from active duty. “Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community,” STARS said in the post. The organization said more than 100 donors contributed to a fundraising campaign that raised over $900,000 for STARS operations, with their names displayed on the helicopter. In a separate Facebook post, The Hangar Flight Museum said it was honoured to become the aircraft’s permanent home, calling it “an inspiring legacy” that will help preserve STARS’ story for future generations. The helicopter is on public display during regular hours at The Hangar Flight Museum. Sign up to get the latest local news headlines delivered directly to your inbox every afternoon.
