An early afternoon fire that occurred on December 13 in the Luxstone neighbourhood which started in a laundry room was caused by a mechanical failure on an electric dryer.

According to the city's fire department, there was minor damage to the home estimated at $1,500 to replace the damaged dryer and minor smoke damage.

Though no injuries were sustained as the residents of the home were able to evacuate safely when their smoke alarms alerted them, the fire department is cautioning residents to keep their laundry rooms clean.

"Read the manufactures instructions and warnings and use the care manuals that come with new dryers and inspect the venting to ensure it is not damaged or restricted," a city press release stated.

AFD also recommends that residents check to ensure nests of rodents or birds are not plugging the outdoor vent and to clean the lint trap after every load. One should also never dry anything containing foam, rubber or plastic.

"Do not run the dryer when you are leaving the home or when you go to bed and do not dry items that have come into contact with anything flammable such as oil or gasoline."

When Airdrie fire crews responded to the townhouse fire, they found that upon arrival, there were heavy smoke conditions were showing on the main level of the mid-unit of a four-unit townhouse complex.

A total of four pieces of fire apparatus and 13 firefighters were on the scene.
