Seven members of the Airdrie Aces track and field team competed from August 5-7 in the Legion Canadian Track and Field Championships in Quebec.

Although each competition was full of excitement, Aces Coach, Jodie Matsuba-Szucs, said there were many tears shed over the upset and loss experienced by the athletes.

Andreas Troschke was the only athlete from the club who earned a medal for his 61.01m throw in the youth men's hammer throw.

For Scott Chalupiak who competed in the 400m hurdles, it was a tough race on Sunday. Chalupiak hit hurdle six hard with his lead leg and as the hurdle fell over it popped up and hit his trail leg.

"Somehow he stayed on his feet after the tangle at hurdle six but the end result was only top ten," said Matsuba-Szucs. "Scott knows too well that is how hurdles go - it can be painfully unforgiving."

Chalupiak's younger sister, Jasmine Szucs, also competed in the 200m hurdles experiencing the same fate, hitting hurdle five and crashing to the ground.

Logan Nellis came in 9th in the 300m sprint and 7th in the 200m final on Sunday, while Isaac Wetmore had a great 1200m run in the heat on Friday to take top 11.

Among the girls, Helena Troschke finished 9th in midget hammer with a 28.42 m throw, and Nadia Hand took 18th with a 36.92m hammer throw in her first nationals.

As the athletes get ready to head home, Matsuba-Szucs says this tournament only represents a small portion of these athletes journeys ahead.

"This is just one meet out of hundreds to come and many factors go into every meet's success and they are never the same."
