A loaded handgun and an estimated $80,000 worth of narcotics were among items seized by police after homes west of Airdrie, in Cochrane, as well as Calgary were searched in early February. As a result of the joint investigation between ALERT Calgary’s organized crime team, Cochrane RCMP and the Calgary Police Service, 60-year-old Kenneth Funk was charged with 10 criminal offences related to drugs and firearms.
The homes were searched as part of an investigation in December 2023 when ALERT received information about suspected drug trafficking taking place in the Cochrane and Calgary areas.
“Any time you have drug trafficking taking place in a smaller community the subsequent issues related to addiction, violence, and property crimes are going to be amplified. Working together with ALERT, we were able to address the issue in a timely manner and keep our community safe,” said Sgt. Matt Pumphrey of the Cochrane RCMP.
The handgun that was seized, was previously reported as stolen in a break-and-enter from October 2023. The firearms will be submitted for forensic analysis and ballistics testing to the Provincial Firearms Solutions Lab to determine if it was used in any other crimes.
ALERT also seized over $1,000 in cash as well 387 grams of cocaine and 746 grams of methamphetamine.
Funk was released from custody to await his next court appearance on March 18.
