The advisory has ended.

Environment and Climate Change Canada previously issued a special weather statement for Airdrie and the surrounding areas, including Cochrane, Olds, and Sundre.

"Unseasonably hot, dry conditions will begin this weekend. The highest temperatures are expected from Sunday through Tuesday. Daytime highs are expected to be in the high 20s to low 30s."

Overnight and early morning lows are expected to be in the low teens.

According to predictions, these daytime highs will be 10 to 15 Degrees Celsius above seasonal values.

With elevated temperatures, the risk of heat-related illnesses will increase.

Airdrie is also currently under a fire advisory due to the current hot and dry conditions. This fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve. Under this advisory, all existing fire permits are suspended, except for acceptable burn barrels and incinerators. New fire permits will be issued until conditions improve, though some essential burning may be allowed at the discretion of the fire department.

Actions that are prohibited include:

  • Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a residential backyard fire pit, is prohibited
  • Consumer fireworks are not permitted

Exemptions include:

  • Acceptable residential fire pits/wood campfires
  • Natural gas, propane fire pits that are CSA-approved or ULC certified
  • Natural gas, propane or electric stoves, barbecues and smokers that are CSA-approved or ULC certified
  • Solid fuelled barbeque appliances, where the primary source of fuel consists of charcoal, briquettes or wood
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters that are CSA-approved or UL certified
  • Acceptable burning barrel for farm use only
  • Incinerator fire
  • Approved fires contained in industrial facilities or sites (energy, forestry or agricultural)

The province-wide fire ban applies inside the Forest Protection Area as well as provincial parks. This means that no open burning is allowed, including backyard fire pits.
