You may want to bring out the heated blankets and shovels this week as things in Airdrie are going to get cold.

Airdrie is set to break temperature records Thursday night and runs the risk of snow falling over the next five days.

It won't be this heavy, but snow is expected to fall this week.

According to Terri Lang, Meteorologist with Environment Canada it all starts soon with an arctic ridge.

"There is a low-pressure system that is developing over northern Alberta and northern BC that will slowly move down through the day and is being pushed down by an arctic high-pressure system so what's that doing is shoving some cold air under the precipitation changing it from rain to snow as for Airdrie you can expect to see it start with rain and have it change to snow overnight Wednesday into Thursday."

Lang also says the amount that will fall is hard to determine.

"Accumulations are hard to gauge because the temperatures are going to be close to zero for a long period of time so a lot of it will fall as wet snow and it will melt but it may start accumulating on lawns and roads."

Airdrie is expecting a low of -7 degrees Thursday night which may break the previous record for cold temperatures on that day in Airdrie that was set back in 1970 when it got down to -6.1 degrees.

"Once it clears out we are looking at some big plummeting temperatures so any tomatoes you may have left that are covered in snow you may want to bring them in, they are going to freeze."
