The Airdrie Sky High Twirlers baton club was in Olds for the Alberta Provincial Baton Competition April 28-30, and just recently received their results.

Head coach Loren Dermody was impressed by how her team did.

"Overall the club did amazing. There were lots of gold medals and lots of first place awards."

The Sky High Twirlers placed first in a majority of the competitions, and also won 6 gold medals in the group divisions. Besides that success, Dermody was impressed that her athletes were able to overcome adversity.

"We had some injuries, but the athletes who were injured were able to overcome them and perform the rest of the weekend."

With provincials behind them, the club now turns their attention to the future. Those that qualified for Nationals at the competition will get ready to head to St. John's in July, but before that there's a qualifier for the International Cup Competition. Dermody says her club is a mix of experience at the international level.

"We're lucky, we have probably half of the team that's been before, so they're the sort of the mentors and the older ones that are guiding the younger ones, and we have about half that have never been to an International Cup competition, so we've sort of got the energy of all the athletes."

Anyone that qualifies for the International Cup will go to Croatia in August.
