There are new changes coming to this years Roll Up The Rim contest at Tim Horton’s and I’m not quite sure how to feel about it.

For years Canadians have grown to love Tim Horton’s simple contest. Buy a coffee, finish it, and then roll the rim up to reveal if you’ve won a prize. Prizes could range from as little to a free doughnut, to a brand new car. This year however, it looks as though Tim Horton’s will be taking a new route towards the annual contest.

This year there will be less “rolling” and less winning. The contest will only run for four weeks opposed to the 10 weeks the promotion ran last year. Along with a short run, the contest will only have a one in nine shot at winning compared to last year’s one in six shot. They will still offer a bunch of the major prizes as they have in the past, but will see a cut in the amount of coffee and food they will be giving away.

Canadians may not like this next change. The company has announced the physical roll up cups will only be available for the first two weeks of the four week long contest. They have chose to move to a more eco-friendly version of the game. The first two weeks customers will be given a normal Roll Up The Rim cup, along with a digital “roll” that will be redeemed through their Tim’s Rewards account through the Tim Horton’s app. This means for the first two weeks you will have two chances to win. After that two weeks is up, customers will only be given the digital “rolls”

Tim Horton's also plans to give away 1.8 million reusable cups on March 10th, before the contest starts. Anyone that buys a drink with these reusable cups will be given three digital “rolls” throughout the entirety of the contest.

I understand both sides of the argument someone may have. We have all grown to love the Roll Up The Rim contest. I’m personally not even a huge coffee drinker, and the thrill of the game even has me in line to get the occasional coffee, despite winning maybe three times in my life. It’s been a tradition a lot of us have grown to love, yet there is no doubt around this time of year, the streets of Airdrie are always littered with extra coffee cups.

Let me know Airdrie, do you support the change to Tim Horton’s Roll Up The Rim, or do you think they should stick with the tradition they’ve become known for?
