Calgary police are alerting the public after a CPS badge was stolen from a vehicle parked at a hiking trailhead outside Canmore on the weekend.

Police said that theft occurred at approximately 2 p.m., on Sunday, December 3. The badge will have regimental number #5296 engraved on it.

"An off-duty CPS officer returned to their vehicle parked at the Yamnuska Trail parking lot, to find the vehicle had been broken into and several items were missing, including a CPS badge," CPS stated in a news release.

It is believed the car prowling occurred sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Anyone with information about the theft or location of the badge is asked to contact the Canmore RCMP non-emergency number at 403-678-5516.

Police are also encouraging members of the public who are unsure of the validity of a police officer to ask to see visible identification with a photograph or call either 9-1-1 or the Calgary Police Service non-emergency number to confirm the officer’s identity.
