New statistics from the Southern Alberta District (SAD) RCMP have signalled that rural crime in the majority of the jurisdiction has decreased. The Southern District encompasses areas including Airdrie, Cochrane, and Beiseker, as well as Lake Louise, Banff, and Kananaskis to name a few.

Police said that from January to March 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023, there have been 76 fewer persons crime offences, 213 fewer property crimes offences, and 373 fewer total criminal code offences.

The year-over-year comparison from January to March 2023 and 2024 shows that Break and Enters decreased 18.4 per cent, while Theft of Motor Vehicles decreased 21.9 per cent. Theft under $5,000 has also decreased by 17.7 per cent 

Staff Sgt. Laura Akitt, District Advisory NCO for SAD said that these statistics show the great work the members are doing in their detachments to combat rural crime.

"We will continue to listen to the needs of the people we serve, working proactively towards the apprehension of those who commit crimes in our communities."
