With no parade or fireworks this year due to COVID-19, Airdrie is celebrating Canada Day in another unique way.

After making the difficult decision to cancel the beloved Canada Day Parade, 'Airdrie Parades' got to work planning an alternate celebration and they came up with the Canada Day Home Decorating Contest.

More than 100 Airdrie homes signed up and have decorated to show their love for the Great White North.

“As disappointed as we are with the cancellation of the Canada Day Parade, we’ve put together an incredible team of volunteers to make something really special…a legacy for Airdrie” says Mayor Peter Brown. “I’m excited to see neighbours connecting with neighbours, and to check out what everyone comes up with.”

Mayor Brown, along with Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt and Airdrie Fire Chief Kevin Weinberger will help judge the houses that have registered to compete.

The Airdrie Parades committee was able to secure a grant from the Government of Canada for almost $10,000 and Brown says the funding was used to purchase prizes from local businesses, reinvesting it into the community.

An interactive map is posted online of all the houses in the competition, so residents can plan their own "reverse parade" route to check out the decorated homes.

"Get involved, have fun, it's going to be great," says Brown.
