Part of Main Street is closed beginning today for the start of construction on underground infrastructure.

The project to upgrade underground water and sewer pipes began in 2019 and was scheduled to be completed last fall. Poor weather during the summer and unforeseen underground conditions made that impossible which is why construction has carried over to 2020.

The City expects the project to be wrapped up sometime in August, weather permitting.

Based on last year's experience, the city understands the construction will impact businesses and residents. However, COVID-19 has most businesses closed or operating at a reduced capacity and with residents being asked to stay home the city is hopeful the impact will be minimal this year.

The first area to see work done (phase 9) will be from Elk Hill to the Airdrie Urgent Care Centre with the following phases moving north. The Urgent Care Centre can still be accessed by residents from the north entrance while emergency vehicles will have access from both directions.

Motorists are being advised to consider using 8th Street and Edmonton Trail as alternative north-south routes while construction goes on.

Transit Route 900 will be temporarily changing the path it takes. Instead of travelling down Main Street, the bus will now take 8th Street to get riders to their destinations.

The temporary route map, bus stop locations, and schedules can be viewed on airdrietransit.ca.
