The Carstairs Fire Department is donating old firefighting equipment to Ukraine.

Through the Fire Industry Repair and Maintenance Inc. (F.I.R.M) in Calgary, those fighting fires in Ukraine will receive firefighting gear from the Carstairs Fire Department. Jordan Schaffer, the Carstairs Fire Chief stated he's proud they can donate this equipment.

"The life of this equipment is still good, but just does not meet the standards in North America. It's great to see that it's going to go back to somewhere that it's going to be used daily and protect people's lives."

Here is all the equipment they are donating:

  • Six sets of bunker gear.
  • 42 masks.
  • 18 bottle (contains air to breathe).
  • Eight packs (harness system that holds the bottles).

Personally for Schaffer, being able to help out means a lot to him.

"We have a member from Ukraine (on the Carstairs Fire Department) so it means a lot to help out. Also, one of my former colleagues who was a paramedic actually went over there and volunteered as a soldier and unfortunately, he was killed in an artillery strike."

In the past, the fire department has donated older gear to other countries like Mexico so they can get the gear that they need

According to Schaffer multiple other fire stations including the City of Airdrie have also donated older equipment so F.I.R.M can send it to where it is needed most in Ukraine.

Schaffer finished off by saying he encourages other fire departments around Alberta will follow in their footsteps and donate their old gear to those in need.
