Alberta is reporting nearly a 50 percent jump in the number of COVID-19 cases being reported in a single day between Saturday and today (April 19).

The number of additional cases reported on Saturday was 165 while today it spiked to 241 bringing the total cases in the province to 2,803.  The surge in the number of cases is attributable to an increase in testing.  In the past 24 hours, the province conducted more than 4,400 tests.

Four more people succumbed to the virus bringing the total who have died to 55.  Three of the deaths reported were in the Calgary Zone with the other in the North Zone.  All four deaths were of people in their 80's or 90's in long-term care facilities. That brings the total number of deaths in the Calgary Zone to 38. 36 deaths have occurred in Alberta long term care centres.  307 residents of those centres have been confirmed with the virus.

The province is also reporting that 1,198 people have now recovered from COVID-19.

The number of cases in the City of Airdrie as well as in Rocky View County remained the same but the ratio of recovered cases to active ones improved in both locales.

In the city, there are still 22 cases, the same as the day before, but one more person has recovered making 14 in total while eight cases remain active.

In Rocky View County the ratio improved even more with two more people recovering for a total of 21.  Eight cases are still active in the county.

71 percent of the total cases in the province have been in the Calgary Zone with 1,995 reported.
