The Peter Lougheed Paved bike path from Lower Lake Campground to Mount Sarrail Campground in K-Country has been closed due to bear activity in the area. The closure notice was issued on Thursday and will remain in effect until further notice.

"Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time."

To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

Please report all bear sightings immediately to 403-591-7755.

The closure comes on the heels of several other bear and wildlife warnings in Kananaskis Country. Last week, Alberta Parks officials issued a warning regarding a moose after a charging incident.

The warning has been in place since Friday, May 17 and will be in effect until further notice for the West Bragg Creek Day Use Area and the Long Distance Trail. According to Parks officials, a moose charged an individual walking their dogs.

Also before the long weekend, parks officials posted another bear warning for the Kananaskis Country Golf Course including the parking lots, Club House, maintenance compound, and other buildings. The warning was prompted after multiple bears frequented the area grizzly and black.

There is also an active bear warning for Canyon Creek Road after a black bear reportedly bluff-charged an individual.
