Airdrie e-scooters had a busy 2023, racking up over 100,000 kilometres travelled.

During the 2023 summer, Airdrie had two different e-scooter providers: Neuron Mobility and Bird Micro-Electric Mobility.

According to Bird, they continued to see strong ridership in 2023. Airdrie saw well over 13,000 rides with 40,000 kilometres across rides. Bird had riders that enjoyed the program and took over 190 rides last season.

Neuron Mobility has shared some statistics from their e-scooters this year:

  • Airdrie’s riders have racked up over 69,000 kilometres since returning for the season in March, with the last day of operations on October 31, 2023.
  • 52 per cent of all trips replaced a car journey, eliminating an estimated 11 tonnes of CO2 emissions in Airdrie.
  • Over six in 10 trips resulted in a purchase from a business with each e-scooter contributing $10,400 per year to the city’s economy.
  • Recent research found that e-scooter riders have one of the smallest gender gaps with 57 per cent male and 40 per cent female, while younger women are embracing them in larger proportions.
  • Rider survey also shows people with disabilities or mobility impairments make up 6 per cent of Neuron’s riders who rely heavily on rental e-scooters for their daily commute.

Chris MacIsaac, Team Leader for Transit at the City of Airdrie stated he thought it was a good overall year.

"We didn't have as many concerns from members of the public about how e-scooters were being used on sidewalks or pathways."

The e-scooter pilot program was expanded for one more year to make three total years.

"We just want to gather more information on usage behaviour patterns to have a better understanding if there are changes that we need to make to any existing bylaws."

When asked when Airdronians could see the e-scooters return, MacIsaac stated it's up to the providers but he does anticipate they will be back in early spring.
