Construction recently got underway on a world-class racing facility for both elite and recreational car racing enthusiasts just outside Carstairs.

A sod-turning ceremony was held last week at the corner of the QEII Highway and Highway 581, directly east of the Town of Carstairs.  The track, being constructed by Rocky Mountain Motorsports (RMSS), will be 3.5 km in length and will be used half the time by RMSS members and used the other half by car and motorcycle clubs.

The first phase of the development is a $35 million project, with funds coming from RMSS investors.  The group's President says now that construction is underway, the membership program, which aims to have about 330 members, has also started to come along.

Plans are now underway to have the track host performance driving schools and new product intros from dealers and auto manufacturers.  Organizers say the facility could be used to test autonomous vehicles.  President Dominic Young says it will be a wonderful facility for Alberta and is something the province doesn't currently have.  Young says the location next to the QEII makes the facility easy to reach from Calgary and Edmonton.

The track is scheduled to open next summer.  Go HERE for more details.
