Hundreds of high school students took time out of their morning to honour the hundreds of Indigenous children who died while attending residential schools.

Students from George McDougall High School placed coloured butterflies on the fence just outside the school Tuesday morning.

The butterflies included words like Hope, Acknowledgment, Support and Justice.

The gesture is one of many ways Rocky View School (RVS) students and staff have shown their support to the Indigenous community since the bodies of 215 children were found at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops.

Since then, 104 more bodies were discovered at the former Brandon Residential Scholl in Manitoba, making for 319 children found so far.

Following the discovery of the children in Kamloops, many have called for George McDougall High School to change its name because of the namesake's affiliation with the residential school system.

RVS has said they are having discussions regarding the name but no decision has been made yet.
