A survey has been sent out by the city to get community feedback on what needs to be done when it comes to recreational spaces and a citizen is trying her best to help.

Fiona Rankin, a citizen of Airdrie, and would like to see more recreational centers in the city that are accessible for people that don’t have vehicles.

“There's a lot of people who don't have vehicles because they're either newlywed or they're retired and some just can't physically get around with a vehicle and I feel like what we need is smaller recreation spaces as opposed to giant rec centers. "

Rankin goes on to talk about why Genesis Place might be a little difficult for kids to enjoy.

“Parents with little kids would love a place to go but Genesis can be very noisy, and for a little one, that's kind of distracting.”

Kids have parks to play in, but as Rankin says, it is cold for eight months of the year and there is no place for them to hang out in the winter.

‘There’s no place for them to go and play indoors.”

“I'm curious if anybody else feels the same way about spending millions to put up a large recreation center, or, dividing that money out into doing multiple smaller recreational centers to have more 12-months-out-of-the-year areas people can walk to and don’t need a car.”

Rankin went on to talk about some different ideas for the recreational centers.

“A small wading pool for babies, a two-lane pool, somewhere people can hang out and do games like checkers and chess, book clubs where seniors can hang out with teenagers and get to know each other and have someplace to go.”

Ranken is excited to see the results of the survey when they become available.

At the recent city council meeting, a presentation was made on how the cities community engagement is doing so far. It's not doing as nearly as well as they would like. Even at the most recent RCMP town hall, it was also brought forward that community engagement is their #1 priority. Both are willing to take suggestions.
