With the high school basketball season just around the corner, the Senior Girls team at W.H. Croxford are preparing to have a big year.

Head Coach Aaron Nisbett has been working with the Cavaliers since the school opened four years ago, and he believes the girls are in a good position for success this season. Nisbett said the team has a core of returning players that have played for the Cavaliers since the beginning, and that has led to crucial team chemistry.

While the team needs to work on some fundamental skills and maintain the chemistry, the girls' competitiveness is a definite strength.

"One thing that the team has never done is actually just sort of give up and stop playing. Even when we're being blown out in a really tough game, each of the girls will still go out there, they'll still try, they'll still play. That's one of the solid strengths, is the tenacity and strength of will that they have on the court."

Nisbett thinks it is likely that every single one of his players will have at least one or two standout games over the course of the season.

"For the seniors that have played for the last four years, now for a lot of them this is their last year playing, so gotta keep an eye out for them as they're going to leave it all on the court. For the ones that are playing senior ball for the first time, they worked hard to earn their spots so that also acts as an inspiration."

Last season, the Cavaliers finished at the bottom of the Rocky View division, and did not make it to Zones. Nisbett said there is nowhere to go but up, and thinks this year will be much more successful. When asked what success looks like, he first jokes that ideally they'd win every game and the division before getting serious.

"Success is just that the girls go out, they have fun, they put out their best effort and as long as you can walk out of each game saying, 'I did all I could and I couldn't do any more,' than win or lose, as cliche as it sounds, that's a win, that's a success."

The Croxford Cavaliers start the season on December 5 on the road against the Bert Church Chargers.
