Airdronian Jessie Schmidt will be representing Airdrie at the 2023 North America Indigenous Games (NAIG) as she will be competing with Team Alberta in softball.

The games are taking place July 15 – 23 in Halifax, Dartmouth, and Millbrook First Nation.

Schmidt, who plays third base and outfield attended a tryout before being told she made Team Alberta.

"I'm super excited. My grandpa is actually Métis, so, he's really excited that I'm participating in the games."

Playing softball for around seven seasons now, Schmidt is excited to take in all the different cultures and this new experience.

"I've been involved in athletics ever since I was little. Over the past few years, I've really refound my love for softball. I just felt like it'd (the NAIG) be a really cool way to represent my heritage."

While their first practice is this Saturday as a team, Schmidt mentioned she is excited to get to know her team.

"I honestly have no idea how we will match up compared to the other teams. But I'm really excited about the opportunity and be able to say I participated in the games.  I feel like it'll be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
