A 19-year-old man has died in an avalanche in Kananaskis Country.

Canmore RCMP were called out after the report of an avalanche east of the Mount Engadine Lodge on Tower Peak in Kananaskis.

Police say two men were skiing in the backcountry when the avalanche occurred.

One of the men was able to free himself by digging himself out of the snow. Unfortunately, the other man was buried.

Canmore RCMP, with the assistance of Kananaskis Mountain Rescue, recovered and retrieved the man's body at around 9:45 this morning.

He's been identified as a 19-year-old man from Kelowna, BC.

Kananaskis Mountain Rescue advises individuals to consistently check the Avalanche Canada website for up-to-date weather and terrain conditions before engaging in any winter activities in the backcountry.
