Good news for promotional businesses, advertisers and Alberta residents, on September 9 the Alberta 'Shield of Arms' will be copyright free, meaning anyone can use the emblem as they please, without facing infringements.

Minister of Culture, Heather Klimchuk says, “The provincial shield is a symbol that reflects the province’s history, its natural and diverse landscapes and its people. Through changes to legislation that began this spring, members of the public will be able to use the shield as long as it is not altered – including on promotional materials, t-shirts, buses and websites.”

Adjustments were made to the Emblems of Alberta Act on September 6, for the reason of "clarity and consistency".

This new amendment however does not apply to one of Alberta's highly regarded symbols, the Armorial Bearings of Alberta (Coat of Arms). Requests from the public to use the armorial bearings must be submitted in writing to the Minister of Culture.

Along with the Shield of Arms, 12 other representative logos are available for free download on the Alberta governments website.
