Two more cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Airdrie.

The number of active cases in our city has increased to 16. So far, 50 Airdronians have recovered from the virus.

In Rocky View County, there are eight active cases and 44 recoveries.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw confirmed 114 new cases in Alberta on Thursday based on more than 8,200 test results. Two more Albertans have died, bringing the total deaths up to 176.

Hinshaw says she is very concerned by the increase in COVID-19 numbers across the province.

Back on July 9, Dr. Hinshaw says there were 590 active cases of the virus in Alberta. Now there are nearly 1,300. 666 of the active cases are in the Calgary zone.

"This needs to be a wake up call," says Dr. Hinshaw. "I believe the recent increase in numbers is in part reflective of the fact that fatigue has set in."

Hospitalizations and ICU admissions are inching closer to peak numbers. 113 people were in hospital back on April 30 and ICU admissions peaked at 23 on May 1.

Currently, 106 Albertans are in hospital with COVID-19, with 21 of those in intensive care. Of those currently hospitalized, Dr. Hinshaw says seven are between the age of 20 and 39.

"Regardless of age, we don't yet know what impact COVID-19 will have on your lifelong health. This is not something to take lightly."

Hinshaw says it's important to continue following all public health orders.

"The guidance we have put in place is the manual for how to live with COVID-19 for at least the rest of this year and likely beyond. It is not an optional suggestion that can be disregarded when inconvenient."
