Anyone interested in getting involved in the local arts community is invited to a meeting at Genesis Place Tuesday night.

The Airdrie Regional ARTS Society is holding its Annual General Meeting and they are looking for new board members.

City Councillor Tina Petrow considers herself a champion for local arts and says the ARTS Society is an integral part of Airdrie.

"It's everything around you. It's the culture that builds your community and it's really what supports your entertainment and your growth," Petrow says. "Especially for young children, having those cultural aspects to your community is so, so important and that comes from boards like this."

Petrow says a city's arts and culture impacts everyday life and is about so much more than paintings and plays.

"It's about our community, it's about the identity of our community, and something that everyone can be proud of," says Petrow, who was disappointed to see Airdrie lose the beloved event Artember when Creative Airdrie dissolved last year.

Petrow says it's ideal to have a broad spectrum of people sit on boards like the Airdrie Regional ARTS Society to represent a good portion of the population.

"They are looking for some fresh people and you don't have to be part of the ARTS Society or part of the arts community," Petrow says. "We need to have people who are artists because they bring that expertise and that knowledge. It would be great to have people who aren't artists to maybe give a fresh perspective to the events and community happenings that go on here."

Tuesday's AGM takes place in the Echo Room at Genesis Place starting at 6:30 p.m.

There's also an ARTS Social this Thursday at Balzac Craft Brewing Company starting at 6 p.m. Anyone who wants to know more about the ARTS Society is welcome to attend to meet and chat with local members and artists.
