Airdrie Rural RCMP is investigating an early morning fire that occurred Saturday morning in Irricana.

According to police, they received a report for a welfare check at approximately 5:45 a.m. for the occupant in a residence on Gib Bell Close.

"Upon arrival police noticed considerable smoke coming from the residence," police stated.

Additional RCMP, Fire Department and EMS support services arrived on scene.

"Efforts by police to gain entry and check the welfare of the occupant were hampered by fire spreading from the attached garage. The fire was extinguished, and an adult female was treated for smoke inhalation and admitted to the Calgary Foothills Hospital for treatment."

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time and the investigation continues.
