The subject of a professional combative sports commission has resurfaced at the City Council meeting on Monday, July 4.

City Council was approached by a promoter on the need for a commission to host professional mixed martial arts fights, also known as MMA.

"These other promoters they don't have a gym here, they don't have roots here," said Luis Coffre, co-owner of Airdrie Martial Arts Center. "Their not a part of the community, we're a part of this community so we care about what happens in this community whereas a promoter will just come in, make his money and whatever."

Coffre feels that an amateur commission would suit Airdrie better, due to the lack of ability to support a professional fight.

Council has motions for staff to look into the possibility and seek the opinion of the public.

"Seeming as we are the only group promoting shows, that has the experience in promoting events, we would really like to be involved because I feel like if you allow some of these would-be promoters that wanna go right into professional MMA right away, its gonna be too much too quick," said Coffre.

Councilman Allan Hunter strongly opposes the commission, siting that MMA promotes too much violence rather than honor.
