An Airdrie couple is sending heartfelt thanks to two City workers after a tumultuous Thursday morning, which saw thousands of dollars worth of tools being scattered on one of Airdrie's busiest roadways.

Craig Stevens and his co-worker Dean, who both work in the City's Road Department, were in their car at the intersection of Main Street and Veterans Boulevard when they noticed that a truck had merged into one of the lanes when its tailgate swung open.

"The tools fell right out," Stevens said. "[Dean] immediately turned on the beacons, backed out, and got into that turn lane because we were going straight through. We cleaned it all up."

Not only did Stevens and his co-worker gather all the scattered tools, but they then drove around the area thinking they might encounter the driver who may now be looking for his tools.

"We waited for another 10 to 15 minutes and we ended up calling our central system, letting them know if anybody calls the City of Airdrie that we have the tools, and then we decided to call the radio station to get the word out."

Stevens placed a call to Air 106.1 FM in the morning to let listeners know what had happened, hoping that perhaps one of those very listeners was the owner of the tools. He added that when he and his partner observed what had happened, it dawned on them that with it being so close to Christmas, they wanted to do their best to make sure the tools were returned.

"I thought what bad timing this is. So, we tried our best to make sure that the individual got the tools back and we were hoping that this was going to work. We're so glad that it did."

Sometime later a social media post appeared in a local group.

"I know this may be a long shot but this morning around 8:30 a.m. my fiancé’s tailgate opened up on his truck and all of his tools fell out. When he was heading into work... It was a bunch of drills and a red Milwaukee case with everything in there. Please if you picked it up can you please message me."

DiscoverAirdrie contacted the individual and the tools found their way back to their owner.

"I just want to say thank you very much to the gentleman who picked it all up and returned it to us. It has been a rough few months, and then to have that go missing which is his livelihood. We thought it was all gone. But to have kind people out there to pick it up and call in was so great to hear. It touched us," the individual wrote to DiscoverAirdrie.

"I want to say thank you for getting the information to us and [thank you] to Craig, The City of Airdrie worker and his [co-worker] partner for grabbing all the tools up."
