What started out as a slow season turned into a provincial gold medal championship. The Airdrie U15 division three girls' basketball team captured the provincial gold medal last weekend in Edmonton.

The team which is a part of the Airdrie Minor Basketball Association started out losing every game by at least 28 points according to their head coach Aaron Freund.

"We had a really rough start of the season; we had a tip-off tournament, and got hammered by some teams. Our best loss was when we lost by 28 points."

From there, the girls put in a lot of work to get into the right form.

"Throughout the season, the girls worked really hard. We came back and that team that we lost you by 28 points, we came back in the city finals and beat them by three points."

The girls ended up winning the city finals tournament in Calgary to head into provincials as the number 1 ranked team from the Calgary region.

In the provincial championship last weekend the girls ended up beating the number-one team from the Edmonton area to claim the gold medal.

"From starting out and having a horrible first kickoff tournament saying, 'oh, this is gonna be a long season,' [and then] all of a sudden we're finishing first at provincials and cities. It was an amazing turnaround. The girls worked really hard, and to their credit, they took the teachings we gave them and ran with it. They put in the hard work."

The team's season started in September and went all the way until the middle of March.
