Soon, Alberta families will be able to purchase liquid pain and fever medications for kids from their neighbourhood pharmacies if they are out of stock.

The Alberta government moved quickly to assure a steady supply for the province in response to the global scarcity of children's pain and fever medications. This quantity of children’s pain and fever medication will keep Alberta's pharmacies' shelves stocked for many years to come.

“When a young child is sick, it can be difficult and stressful for parents and families, and that’s one of the reasons we acted so quickly to procure this medicine. This pain and fever medicine is being sent to pharmacies across the province so families can purchase it, and I’m so pleased Alberta parents and caregivers do not need to wait any longer,” explained Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

750,000 Parol bottles will be imported and sold over-the-counter at pharmacies throughout Alberta that was approved by Health Canada. On March 2, the first shipment of the approved medicine arrived in the province. As per federal regulation, it had to be held in quarantine for testing before being distributed to pharmacies.

This is the second shipment of Parol, from Atabay Pharmaceuticals in Türkiye, to be approved for import by Health Canada. The first shipment of 250,000 bottles, which arrived on Jan. 18, was approved by Health Canada for use in Alberta hospitals.

Minister of Health Jason Copping explained, “Supporting parents by enabling them to provide improved care at home, in turn, supports our health system. This much-needed medication will ease the stress felt by Alberta families who are trying to relieve the pain and fevers of their children.”

The government's plan to import 500,000 bottles of Pedifen-branded children's ibuprofen for sale in pharmacies and hospital use has also been approved by Health Canada.
