Enviroment Canada is calling for heavy rainfall begining Friday, July 15th to Saturday July 16th.

Heavy rains are expected along the foothills in southern Alberta associated with an upper low pressure system moving in from British Columbia.

"Just from it's location, the flow is actually gonna wrap those thunderstorms back in towards the Rockies and as it stands right now, we have Airdrie and the Kananaskis area kind of in the firing lines of where those heavier showers are going to persist." said Operational Meteorologist with Enviroment Canada Ross McDonald.

By Saturday morning 50 to 70 mm of rain is likely in the Airdrie and Kananaskis regions. Surrounding regions are expected to receive 20 to 40 mm of rain.

The rain is forecast to continue through Saturday and taper off Saturday night.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Residents are reminded to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, call the Discover Airdrie news centre at 587-775-6746 or email airdrienews@goldenwestradio.com
