A young woman from Airdrie is marking International Women's Day in the nation's capital.

Nyagua Chiek is a "Daughters of the Vote" (DOV) delegate, representing the federal riding of Banff - Airdrie.  Daughters of the Vote is an initiative of Equal Voice Canada, a national multi-partisan organization dedicated to electing more women to all levels of government in Canada.  DOV delegates from across the country are in Ottawa for a two day meeting marking a century of women's suffrage and celebrating International Women's Day.

International Women's Day is recognized globally on March 8th and celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  The day is also a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

This is the second time Chiek has been a DOV delegate.  In February she travelled to Edmonton to represent Banff - Airdrie. She said that event had motivated her to get involved in politics.

Chiek is a first generation South Sudanese - Canadian who is a strong advocate for women's right's and mass atrocity prevention.  She is a Plan Canada Youth Ambassador and speaker.  Chiek works to encourage equality in every setting and challenges inequality as often as possible.

As a delegate at the United Nations Youth Assembly in New York, she focused on gender equality.
