Airdrie's crime stats are trending in the opposite direction of the provincial crime stats in Alberta that have shown some significant increases according to Statistics Canada.

The Airdrie RCMP have been working on their 3 year policing plan that was created in 2013, implementing new strategies and policing techniques that have proven to pay off.

Inspector Gordon Sage said that he was very happy to report the decline in numbers since January.

"Airdrie has seen a significant drop in pretty much all areas, including persons crime, break and enters, property crime, motor vehicle collisions, and one really good news is that domestics have significantly gone down."

This years persons crimes have dropped from 317 to 277, property crime has dropped from 1100 to 1000, and domestics have dropped from 66 to 49.

Sage said there are a couple factors that can be attributed to the lower crime stats, including some out of the box policing strategies.

"We're doing a lot of pro-active police work, were working smarter targeting specific problem areas. Where using I guess nontraditional methods sometimes by using things like night vision at night time during the early hours to catch and to patrol these areas using technology to our advantage."

One area of crime in Airdrie that has gone up is vehicle thefts, which Sage attributes to people still leaving their vehicles unlocked.
