Airdrie police are trying to determine exactly what happened on Canada Day when a young cyclist was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.

The incident occured at the intersection of Edmonton Trail and Third Avenue at around 10:30am.

"A seventeen year old youth was crossing the road and was on his bicycle," said Cst. Dan Martin.  "It doesn't sound like he was dismounted. He was riding his bike across the cross walk where he was struck by a vehicle."

The young man was knocked off his bike and the vehicle left the scene.

"There was obviously injuries sustained by the youth at the scene. The youth was brought to the hospital by his mother I believe, and was treated and released. At this time RCMP don't have any further information on what injuries he received."

The young man was able to give a description of the vehicle, and now RCMP hope witnesses or the driver will come forward to share what happened.

"Himself and some of his friends that were in the area indicate that it was a red Dodge Charger that left the scene. At this time we're just looking for witnesses to the collision. If there's any out there, if they could contact RCMP."
