With school out for the summer, kids can be found all over the city and drivers are being reminded that playground zones are still in effect.

Although many of Airdrie's playground zones are already in 30km/hr speed limits, a few of them are in 50km/hr speed limit zones.

Ken Velcic, a municipal engineering technologist with the City of Airdrie, said Airdrie does have a campaign reminding drivers of speed limits.

"We do have a campaign where we put those signs out, reminding residents that their neighborhood is 30km/hr and it applies to the whole neighborhood, not just playground zones. Most of our playground zones are in those 30km zones."

While playground zones are in effect all year round, it is especially important for their posted speed limit to be followed during summer hours.

"Those zones are actually defined under the Traffic Safety Act. The Alberta Government defines playground zones and the school zones. They also leave it to each municipality to determine the times that those zones are in effect," said Velcic.

In Airdrie, playground zones are in effect from 8:30a.m. until one hour after sunset, every day.
